The short version: the compass reads your device's orientation sensor inside your browser. That reading is used to draw the dial and nothing else. It is never sent to us or to anyone else. We do not request your location, we do not run advertising profiles, and there is no account to create.

1. Who we are

Free Digital Compass ("we", "us") operates this website, a browser-based digital compass available at freedigitalcompass.com. This policy explains what happens to information when you use it.

2. Information we collect

We do not collect personal information. There is no sign-up, no login, and no user profile. Specifically:

  • Sensor data. With your permission, the browser exposes device orientation readings to the page. These are processed in memory on your device to compute a heading. They are not stored and not transmitted.
  • Location. We never request geolocation. The compass does not know where you are.
  • Local storage. Your preferences — theme, heading units and the spoken-heading setting — are saved in your browser's local storage so they persist between visits. This data stays on your device and can be cleared at any time through your browser settings.
  • Server logs. Our hosting provider may record standard technical request data such as IP address and user agent for security and reliability purposes. We do not use this to identify or profile visitors.

3. How we use information

Sensor readings are used for exactly one purpose: calculating and displaying your current heading, including the bearing-lock deviation, the spoken readout and the calibration guide. All of this happens on your device.

4. Sharing and disclosure

We do not sell, rent or share your information, because we do not hold any. We may disclose technical information if legally required to do so, or to protect the security and integrity of the service.

5. Third parties

This site is served as static files. It does not load third-party advertising, tracking pixels or social media embeds that would receive your data. If that ever changes, this policy will be updated before the change takes effect.

6. Your choices and rights

You control sensor access through your browser. Revoking motion or orientation permission disables the compass; everything else on the page continues to work. You can clear locally stored preferences at any time via your browser's site-data settings.

Depending on where you live you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA to access, correct or delete personal data held about you. Because we do not collect personal data, there is generally nothing for us to retrieve or erase — but you are welcome to contact us with any question or request.

7. Children

This service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

8. Security

The site is served over HTTPS. Because we do not store personal data, there is no database of user information to breach. Sensor data never leaves your device.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service evolves. Material changes will be reflected in the "last updated" date at the top of this page.
